If you use a D-Link or Netgear router, it is the high probability that you will tumble into some number like this This number represents a default IP address of your router. It is good to know this because sometimes it could be helpful. as a Default, Private IP Address

Every device (such as computer, tablet, printer, etc.) that is a part of some kind of network has to possess an IP address. Without such address, there would be no informational communication between these devices what so ever.

Roughly speaking, there are two kinds of networks: private and public. The first kind is a local network that is connecting devices in some home, school or company. The second kind is a network that operates globally. The most famous public network is the Internet.

Devices that are connected to some local, private network need to have private IP addresses. On the other hand, devices which are part of a public network necessarily possess public IP addresses. While private IP addresses don’t need to be globally unique, those that are public have to be unique ones. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) reserved some IP addresses as private ones because these addresses can be multiply used.

The IP is one of those private addresses. Hence, it can be used only as IP address of some device that is the part of some local network. Most commonly, that device is a router. Some router manufacturers use as default IP address for their routers. The most famous manufacturers are D-Link and Netgear. Because of them, is the IP address which is one of the most used as default.

When IP address is a default for some router then it will be its private address within some local network. However, this doesn’t mean that it necessarily have to be an IP address for the router. The administrator can change it after the installation of the router.

Why Changing a Router’s IP Address?

If a router has its default IP address why I will ever need to change it?

Mostly, you won’t need to change an IP address. The reason for this is simple. There are two types of IP addresses (besides of private and public): static and dynamic. Static IP addresses are those that stay fixed after they have been assigned to some device. They are always with the same device as time goes on. On the other hand, dynamic IP addresses are those that are assigned to some devices only for a specific amount of time. After that, they are returning to the address pool where they wait for some other device to be assigned again. Routers are devices that use static IP addresses and that’s why they are always tied to some particular IP address.

However, in some rare cases, there could be a situation where two devices use static IP addresses. In that situation, the problem can emerge if router’s default IP address is already used by that other device with static IP address.

For example, if you installed new router which has default IP address and at the same time you had already assign the identical IP address to some machine in the same local network than telecommunication traffic will not be established.

The cause of this problem is the IP address conflict. There must not be two identical IP addresses within the same local network.

Exit from this problem is changing an IP address. It is up to you to decide what IP address will assign to whichdevice. In our example, you can change router’s default IP address or you can change the IP address of the machine.

How To Change Router’s IP Address

If you decided to change your router’s IP address but don’t know how to do it, don’t worry. It is not difficult at all. Just follow these steps.

  1. You need to login into your account. You can use any Internet browser. Check what the default IP address of your router is. That could be written somewhere on the router or in some instruction book. In our example, it is Now enter this IP into the address bar of a browser. That would lead you to the login page. There you need to enter your username and password or to use default ones if you do this for the first time. After that, you will go to the router setting page.
  2. Now you need to open the basic setup page. It could vary for different routers but generally, that shouldn’t be a big problem to find it.
  3. Here you will find the information about IP address. You need to change LAN (local area network) IP address. You can use any IP address that is reserved to be a private one. The easiest way is to change just last or last two numbers. For example, you can change into Just make sure that this new one is not reserved by any other device from your local network.

At the end, click Apply and wait for your router to reboot. Notice that you should remember this new IP address because it will need you for getting to the setting page.
